Supporting the Mayors’ Food Bank Challenge
Last month, our Vancouver Office and CF joined the Mayors’ Food Bank Challenge, this will open in a new tab; supporting the mayors of Vancouver, Burnaby, North Vancouver, New Westminster and the District of North Vancouver in their mission to help the Greater Vancouver Foodbank, this will open in a new tab (GVFB) feed clients in need.
The GVFB provides assistance to nearly 8,500 people monthly, and around 27,500 children, 113,300 adults, and 53,500 seniors annually. They also provide food support to more than 90 community agencies such as housing agencies, women and children’s shelters, transition homes and after school programs, which in turn provide hot meals and snacks to thousands of people each week.
CF’s $10,000 donation helps GVFB purchase fresh foods (proteins, produce and dairy) directly from local farmers. More than 50% of the food GVFB distributes is fresh, as they strive to purchase more non-perishable, high protein foods and items their clients really value, such as stews, cereal and pasta sauce.
GVFB’s children programs also contain more expensive, highly nutritious foods because these are often the items food insecure families struggle to provide.
The Mayors’ Food Bank Challenge wrapped up on May 31st and saw $458,864 raised!
