Toronto, ON (June 2, 2022) - As a purpose-led organization, committed to Transforming Communities for a Vibrant Tomorrow, Cadillac Fairview (CF) is announcing two new Indigenous Scholarships that will empower 25 Indigenous students across Ontario and British Columbia by providing multi-year funding supporting education and career development. Launched in alignment with National Indigenous History Month, the Program supports CF’s philanthropic efforts to foster social connection in local communities across Canada.
“Cadillac Fairview is committed to creating a positive impact at a local level through our charitable partnerships,” said Jason Anderson, Senior Vice President, Brand & Marketing, Cadillac Fairview. “Through these scholarships with Indspire and the University of British Columbia, we hope to empower First Nations, Inuit and Métis students across Ontario and British Columbia, ensuring they have opportunities for success.
Building Brighter Futures - Indigenous Bursary Awards
CF is proud to provide $80,000 to Indspire, this will open in a new tab’s Building Brighter Futures - Indigenous Bursary Awards which will be allocated through four $5,000 bursaries annually until 2025. Indspire is a national Indigenous registered charity that invests in the education of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people for the long-term benefit of these individuals, their families and communities, and Canada.
The awards, sponsored by CF Sherway Gardens, CF Markville, CF Toronto Eaton Centre and Yonge Corporate Centre, will be distributed to First Nation, Inuit and Métis students who are attending post-secondary institutions in Ontario (i.e. college, university, technical college or apprenticeship program), who require financial support toward education costs and who demonstrate a strong commitment to community.
Cadillac Fairview Award in Real Estate for Indigenous Students
Through a new five-year partnership with the University of British Columbia (UBC), our collection of Vancouver Waterfront Properties has allocated $25,000 to fund the Cadillac Fairview Award in Real Estate for Indigenous Students which encourages Indigenous students to pursue a career in the commercial real estate industry. $5,000 will be awarded each year until 2026 to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students of Canada who are in the Bachelor of Commerce program, have achieved good academic standing and have demonstrated an interest in commercial real estate, with preference given to students from Host Nations of UBC Vancouver (Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh) and Indigenous residents in Metro Vancouver. The awards are made on the recommendation of the UBC Sauder School of Business.
Supporting Cultural Understanding and a Path Toward Reconciliation
CF’s support is further bolstered with a renewed commitment of $20,000 towards the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, this will open in a new tab (DWF) in support of their ongoing work to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
DWF is hosting four virtual events for everyone in Canada to tune into throughout the month of June to celebrate Indigenous history, culture, and arts, and raise awareness of the true history and impact of Canada’s residential school system. The themes for this year’s program are reflection, honour, and commitment, and will feature Indigenous teachings, artist performances, and cultural presentations from the Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick.
