This marks the second ENERGY STAR® Canada Award for this building, with the first recognition being awarded in 2018.

YCC-09

SEPTEMBER 26, 2023 (Toronto, ON) - Cadillac Fairview (CF) is pleased to announce that 4110 Yonge Street, located within the Yonge Corporate Centre (YCC), has been awarded an ENERGY STAR® Canada Award from Natural Resources Canada for its dedication to protecting the environment through superior energy achievements in Canada. This marks the second ENERGY STAR® Canada Award for this building, with the first recognition being awarded in 2018.

ENERGY STAR® Canada is committed to recognizing and rewarding businesses and organizations for their outstanding contributions as it relates to advancing energy efficiency, protecting the environment and saving energy. Winners of the award are chosen based on their overall contributions to build a more sustainable future for all Canadians, while also improving the quality of life for Canadians from coast to coast by ensuring Canada’s natural resources are developed sustainably, competitively and inclusively.

“This award showcases the drive and determination our teams proudly exhibit when it comes to overall sustainability and energy saving practices,” said Patricia Poyntz, General Manager of Yonge Corporate Centre. “Our team at YCC is thrilled to receive this recognition, and to work for an organization that prioritizes environmental, sustainability and governance commitments to ultimately create positive and lasting impacts on the communities that we serve.”

Since 2008, and the introduction of Green at Work® (GAW), CF’s national program for operational sustainability, portfolio-wide energy savings of over 47% have been achieved, as well as an overall emissions reduction of 58%. At YCC specifically, recent notable accomplishments include:

  • Fine tuning of the boiler modulation. The team monitored the heating weekly as they fine-tuned the controls to ensure maximum efficiency and energy savings while maintaining the integrity of the boilers.

  • YCC followed the corporate COVID protocol for safety, but were able to reduce outside air amounts twice during the year. The fan systems and CO2 levels were continually monitored throughout the year to ensure occupant safety and smooth operation.

  • Chiller plant operation was fine-tuned to integrate the operation of all major pieces of equipment such as chillers, cooling towers and chilled water/condenser water pumps. By varying the setpoint for each piece of equipment,  the team identified certain combinations that yielded an improvement in the overall chiller plant efficiency.

  • Property team adhered to Energy Smart Operations, also known as ESO inorder to better understand opportunities and take corrective measures of existing building energy consuming systems. This smart energy system optimizes technologies incorporated in the building BAS System which helps efficiency, enhances sustainability and enables energy cost reduction.

  • To better understand the building’s after-hours operation and address areas of opportunity to improve efficiency by controlling equipment and systems that are running unnecessarily, the property team conducts after-hour audits.

CF has a long standing history of promoting a culture of sustainability. This can be seen with the launch of GAW in 2008, and subsequent projects and award recognitions. Some of which include, but are not limited to, the continued rollout of low-waste dining halls across the country, recognition as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2023,  Platinum Level BOMA Best Certification for 2022 at CF Polo Park, Zero Carbon Building Certification at all buildings in the Vancouver office portfolio, and the replacement of the CF Toronto Eaton Centre skylight roof with innovative materials and technologies to improve energy efficiency.
