As part of our commitment to supporting Indigenous organizations in our communities, this year, Cadillac Fairview (CF) is proud to provide $10,000 towards the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, this will open in a new tab (DWF), for a total of $70,000 since 2021. DWF aims to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, as well as provide access to education on the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada and history and lasting impact of residential schools. Indspire In 2022, CF established a multi-year commitment to provide $5,000 in annual bursaries through Indspire, this will open in a new tab’s Building Brighter Futures program. This award is sponsored by CF Sherway Gardens, CF Markville, CF Toronto Eaton Centre, Yonge Corporate Centre, RBC Centre & Simcoe Place, and TD Centre, to be distributed to First Nation, Inuit and Métis students attending a post-secondary institution in Ontario. In addition, with the Government of Canada matching these donations, six more students are able to receive $5,000 in bursaries for a total of 12 recipients in 2024. We’re honoured to share a few stories from our recipients: Natasha Maw Thessalon Bachelor’s in Social Work, Laurentian University “I am Natasha, a dedicated student currently pursuing a degree in Indigenous social work. My goal is to contribute positively to Indigenous communities and make a meaningful impact. Transitioning to university life has been quite challenging as I balance my studies, job, and social activities. However, the Indigenous bursary from Cadillac Fairview has been an incredible source of support, alleviating the financial strain of purchasing school supplies, allowing me to take time off work during exam periods, and reducing the stress associated with financial concerns. I am deeply thankful for Cadillac Fairview's support and their commitment to assisting Indigenous students like myself. This bursary has made a significant difference in my academic journey, and I am truly grateful for the assistance provided.” Naashkii Soler Ojibways of Onigaming Bachelor of Arts and Science, Queen’s University “Thank you so much Cadillac Fairview for your generous support of my education. I just finished my first year at Queen’s University studying Indigenous Studies and Political Science. I am Anishinaabe originating from the Ojibways of Onigaming in northern Ontario. My grandmother is a residential school survivor, and I truly understand the importance of education. She, along with my father, were able to use education as a tool to escape poverty and addiction. Every day, I make sure to cherish the fact that I have the opportunity to learn in a safe and respectful environment- somewhere that appreciates and uplifts my culture and identity. Thanks to the generous bursary from Cadillac Fairview, I was able to flourish in a university setting this year!” Myriam Boucher Mohawks of Kanesatake Bachelor’s in LInguistics and Psychology, University of Ottawa “Receiving the Cadillac Fairview bursary has been a transformative experience for me. As a Psychology and Linguistics student at the University of Ottawa, this financial support allows me to fully immerse myself in my studies without the added stress of financial concerns. Receiving this bursary is not only a financial relief but also an inspiration. It motivates me to strive for excellence and to contribute positively to my community. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity as I pursue my academic and professional goals.” CF Award in Real Estate for Indigenous Students In addition, as part of our five-year partnership with the University of British Columbia (UBC) from 2022-2026, CF awards a First Nations, Inuit or Métis student pursuing a career in commercial real estate with a $5,000 bursary through our Waterfront Properties in Vancouver. This year, we’re thrilled to announce that our recipient is Bailey Hill. To learn more about CF’s support of Indigenous bursaries, click here.
