August 28, 2023 (TORONTO, ON) - Cadillac Fairview (CF) is pleased to announce the company has secured additional Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) – Performance standard certifications across its Vancouver Office Portfolio.
The Zero Carbon Building certification for performance is administered by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC, this will open in a new tab) to recognize buildings with zero-carbon operations. In addition to seven buildings certified in November 2022, the CaGBC awarded the industry leading certification to four Pacific Centre Office locations at 700 West Pender, 750 West Pender, 725 Granville, and 701 West Georgia. The certifications awarded across all 11 buildings represent more than 3,135,000 square feet of best-in-class office space.
“As our world experiences significantly more effects of climate change, it is critical for businesses to evaluate their operational performance as it relates to social and environmental impact and understand how we can contribute to the global effort to reduce carbon emissions," commented Sal Iacono, EVP, Operations, Cadillac Fairview. “CF is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions for our Canadian portfolio and this recognition is a strong reflection of our values and vision to support a vibrant and sustainable future.”
The ZCB certifications were achieved through CF’s comprehensive range of greenhouse gas emission mitigation initiatives and commitment to low carbon transition. CF has incorporated advanced technologies and best practices to support CF’s journey to net zero, such as a Fault Detection & Diagnostic smart platform to optimize building systems for energy efficiency. For buildings with residual carbon at the time of certification, CF has established progressive low carbon transition plans and committed to decarbonization capital projects that will significantly reduce the buildings' emissions such as heat recovery chillers, thermal energy storage, and electrification.
In addition to today’s announcement, CF’s Calgary City Centre also received award recognition from the City of Calgary’s Commercial and Institutional Energy Benchmarking, this will open in a new tab program, as the top performing office property in this voluntary disclosure program, with an Energy Star Score of 98. This property was compared against 68 properties and came out with the lowest Total Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity of 67.8 kg CO2e/m2/year, which is 47% better than the category average of 128 kg CO2e/m2/year in 2021. CF attributes the recognition and results to close collaboration with clients and occupants, along with its strong culture of environmental stewardship.
